La Tamborrada is a festival held annually in mid January, in San Sebastián, Spain. At midnight, the town gathers in Konstituzio Plaza in Old Town to celebrate the raising of the San Sebastián flag, which signals the beginning of the 24-hour festival. From midnight to midnight, the streets come alive with Donostiarras, or the people of San Sebastian, who dress as cooks and soldiers and march in drumming groups across various parts of the city. Known as one of Spain’s loudest parties, Tamborrada takes over the city with echoes of the “March of San Sebastián” song that drummers beat all day until the flag is lowered. In addition to drums and dancing, Tamborrada honors San Sebastián’s distinctive culinary history. The drummers dressed in chef uniforms pay tribute to the city’s culinary clubs, known as sociedades gastronómicas.
